Niue Yacht Club

" Biggest Little Yacht Club In The World ! "

“All roads lead to Rome” as they say.Now we have a new maxim. ” All winds and currents lead to Niue” A few readers may be old enough to remember R.L.Ripley’s “Believe it or not.” series, so how about this true story. Late last year the crew off “Dosia” sailed into the sheltered waters of Beveridge Reef and met up with another yacht already anchored there, for drinkies and dinner. Later in the evening “Oops who didn’t tie our tender on properly” as there was no sign. It was dark and a futile search took place within the reef. A further sweep outside the reef in the morning produced nothing and Dosia sailed on towards Niue in the hope of buying a replacement tender here. Nothing was available, and so on to Tonga, tenderless. Ten days after Dosia left Niue and 120 nautical miles later Ape (Ah Peh) a local fisherman found the missing tender, upside down and 50 metres from being shredded on our reef. He righted it, towed it back to shore, rinsed out the outboard, dried it it “fired up” and it kept running. Dosia’s captain was notified and offered a reward for its return. All was achieved with the help of the Captain of Gillarro – hence the tender tender reunion. It is also a tribute to the resilience of the Caribe brand. “Believe it or not!” Strange things happen at sea.

Many of us really try hard to achieve our best performance in so many different areas. Decorum and lack of space here limits the lists that we achieve our personal best in.Henceforth to be called”pb” However the captain off a yacht here recently achieved his pb in a backwards long jump from a crouch. This is a very difficult position to suddenly unleash any kinetic energy one possesses. However Hans, from a yacht registered in Crotia, created a Niuean record that could become a world record, subject to verification. Hans had come to collect my scuba tank and as we have a large Niuean dog, tied up, I warned Hans about his unpredictability and held his collar. The dog, not Hans. “Not a problem!’ he replied” I have had dogs all my life.” and so he crouched down and let the dog sniff the back of his hand. This is the approved method recommended in “Dog Whisperer” by I V Ben Bitten. Hence the pb achieved by Hans. His friend and interpreter explained the sudden outburst that loosely translated was”**** the dog bit me. The first time in my life” Once his friend had stopped laughing, he suggested I take the dog to the vet in case he had picked up an infection from Hans. So in our own small way, we make the world a better place by achieving pbs in so many different ways. Thank you Hands, -oops Hans, for brightening our day.
